How does it work?

Every person starting work in Denmark needs a tax identification number and a tax card. The employer calculates the salary based on the tax card. 

Required documents:

  • employment contract (signed by the employer),
  • ID card or passport,
  • marriage certificate (if applicable)

Every person staying over 185 days a year, using a car with a registration number other than Danish, should obtain a permit to drive the vehicle. The case is referred to SKAT (automotive department).

A tax card is a kind of forecast of your income, each change, e.g., a change in the hourly rate, transition to sickness benefit, unemployment benefit, change of job, must be included in the tax card, which has a direct impact on your current income and will allow you to optimize your annual settlement.

The annual statement is a document prepared by the Danish Tax Office (SKAT). In this settlement you will find, among others information about your income, taxes paid, and tax reliefs.

The annual statement is prepared by the Danish tax office according to the documentation it has on our income. Every year (usually in the middle of March) such settlements are available to taxpayers. Each person earning income in the previous year is entitled to check the correctness of the entered data and to make corrections.

The most frequently introduced corrections include: the cost of travel between the address of residence in Denmark and in Poland, alimony, the cost of mortgage interest, relief for the unemployed spouse and others. It is possible to introduce changes (corrections) up to 3 years back.

If you have been a Polish resident since 2021, you are also obligated to settle accounts in Poland, the method of proportional deduction.

Anyone receiving income in Denmark should have a NemKonto. NemKonto is the designated bank account to which the Danish state institutions transfer the money due. An example of such money transfers may be the payment of FeriePenge, overpayment of tax or payment of family benefits. The indicated account can be both a Danish and a foreign account, e.g., Polish.

  • in the case of a Danish Reg number and account number, and a foreign IBAN, swift, bank name and address.

Feriepenge is a holiday pay that is paid to everyone working in Denmark. The employer is obliged to deduct 12.5% of the hourly wage for the holiday account for each hour worked.

  • if you do not have a NemID, you will need a copy of the employment contract to which the holiday credits are paid (first day of vacation, number of vacation days).

A-kasse is a voluntary unemployment insurance. Our help consists in explaining how the insurance works, help in choosing the right organisation, and help in signing up for insurance.

What is the TastSelv code? Thanks to the TastSelv code, you can log in to the website of the Danish Tax Office Skat. You can use it to submit your tax return online.

Help in informing the civil registration service, notifying the bank, tax office, transferring the NemKonto to the indicated bank account, checking the account with holiday money and possible withdrawal.

When you leave Denmark permanently, you can receive a payment of your funds accumulated in the pension fund, you can check the information on the level of contributions paid on the website pensionsinfo.dk. According to Danish law, the payment of pension funds is subject to a 60% transfer fee to the state, when you withdraw all funds, you get 40% of their value.
